A number of momentous, world-changing firsts took place in this city: In 1785 Congress met in New York City under the Articles of Confederation. In 1789 New York hosted the inauguration of George Washington as the first President of the United States.
In 1789 New York became the Nation’s first capital, under the United States Constitution.
The first U.S. Congress and the first U.S. Supreme Court convened in New York City. It was in this city that they drafted the Bill of Rights. Some nicknames include: The Empire City, The Big Apple, The City that Never Sleeps, The Melting Pot.
